Treatment Options

Care usually combines medical treatment, safety planning, caregiver education, and structured daily support.

  • Symptom treatments: Donepezil, rivastigmine, galantamine, and memantine may be appropriate for some patients.
  • Disease-modifying therapies: FDA-approved anti-amyloid treatments include lecanemab (Leqembi) and donanemab (Kisunla) for carefully selected patients with mild cognitive impairment or mild dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Specialist monitoring: These therapies are not cures and can cause amyloid-related imaging abnormalities (ARIA), including brain swelling or bleeding. Eligibility, amyloid confirmation, MRI monitoring, medication interactions, and individual risk must be reviewed by a qualified specialist.
  • Non-drug care: Exercise, consistent routines, sleep care, hearing and vision support, hydration, environmental cues, and caregiver training remain essential.

Treatment decisions must be individualized. Never start, stop, or change a prescription without the prescribing clinician.
